Wild Rice and Onion Bread

THE FRIDGE ORDEAL

Life is what happens while you are busy making other plans.
- John Lennon

A workshop in Italy just one short week away and another in the planning, a book proposal I should be writing furiously and blog posts galore. Not to mention the broken refrigerator that found me kneeling on the floor mopping up the growing puddle emanating from the hidden darkness underneath, cursing and grumbling much to my husband's amusement (don't even ask) and wondering what to do with the ice cream, frozen French fries and Chinese potstickers now growing warm and soft. Baking bread was the last thing on my mind.

French Gâteau Fondant au Chocolat

WELL LOVED

To find joy in work is to discover the fountain of youth.
- Pearl S. Buck

My father was never one to give fatherly advice. He loved us and coddled us, encouraged us and scolded us (when appropriate) and sometimes raised his voice to us (noisy, joyous children during the evening news) yet his expectations and desires for each of us were implied rather than stated, implied and understood. In his own quiet, gentle way, he let us know that we were to get an excellent education and all become lawyers or doctors. Yeah. He did.

Easy, Fabulous Coffee Pudding

THE LOVE OF A SON

What you are to do without me I cannot imagine.
― George Bernard Shaw, Pygmalion

An argument with my son about the aesthetics of cemeteries had me thinking about his motivation, his intent. A mother's attempt to second guess a child's line of thinking. And led many of my readers to judge, to offer their own theories. His own fear of death, some deduced; his inability to consider the end, others conjectured. One friend seems to have seen through his hysteria and discomfort and understood one facet of what it took me a moment to understand. "For me it's about my (and your) right to have a life beyond them; to even do something they might not like and have them accept that as surely as we accepted things they have done over the years."
